Automatic Updates Cannot Be Turned On?
This was one of the main signs that my computer was infected. With no apparent reason, Windows Automatic Updates could not be turned on whatever I tried. Spending much time on a computer, I knew this was serious... let's go through some important steps.
Step 1) Manual activation:
If you click on the "bubble warning" to turn on your automatic updates but nothing happens when you click on "turn on updates", this is how you initialize this action manually...
- START > Control Panel (Classic View) > Automatic Updates
or
- START > Control Panel (Category View) > Performance & Maintenance > System > Automatic Updates

If that doesn't work, try this...
- START > RUN > (type in) services.msc

- Look for automatic updates... (right click) stop > (right click) restart
If this still doesn't work, you have some real problems! But don't worry, I was in the same situation you are. After searching for hours, there was only one solution to my problem... Manually updating windows myself!!!
Downloading or Re-Installing Service Pack 3:
Download Windows Service Pack 3:
Do this even if you already updated your system to service pack 3. This will allow you to re-load some crudial drivers that may of been lost from any malware hijackers, etc.
Downloading Security Updates:
After re-booting your system, you'll want to update your security updates as well.

Installing Windows Defender:
Now that you've downloaded all of your security updates and rebooted a couple of times, it's not time to get "Windows Defender". This program is just like most spyware protection tools but is specificly designed by Microsoft. After downloading this program, try to run an update, if you still can't run the update i'll show you how to do so manually after.
If you already have Windows Defender, try updating your definitions and performing a smart scan.
Download Microsoft Defender:

Again, once downloaded run "Update Definitions". If you still cannot retreive new definitions, we need to update them manually by downloading the new ones from here...

When the little download box pops up, click "RUN". Once complete, run a full scan of your system using Windows Defender and remove any unwanted files. Do one more reboot and your done.
This small but useful tutorial should solve your problem right away. If when you reboot your computer, your Windows Automatic Updates is not turned on, go ahead and turn it on manually which should finally work.
